Preoccupied and fearful attachments are characterized by a fear of loss and abandonment. The results show a link between insecure attachment (preoccupied and fearful) and hoarding. One hundred and ninety-seven non-clinical women (M = 30.58) completed two self-report questionnaires on attachment and hoarding behaviors. This study aims to better understand the links between attachment and hoarding. Acquiring objects may give people momentary support, normally provided by the attachment figure in cases of stress. Studies concerning attachment and hoarding suggest that attachment representations may impact seeking or possessing objects. Hoarding is also linked to seeking support from objects. These notions are close to those constituting attachment representations. Hoarding is linked to ambivalence and uncertainty about one's self and others. Although DS is not included in DSM 5 or ICD-11 as a stand-alone entity, we consider that the use of an eponym related to the ancient and well known philosopher can be very useful in teaching medical terminology, but also it could contribute to medicine students’ cultural background. We conclude that the name of the syndrome correlates well with Diogenes’ life and philosophy as the name of the syndrome is a reference to the self-isolation and rejection of the outside world practiced by the cynical philosopher. To find if this syndrome should be maintain or not in the geriatric and psychiatric practices. We reviewed selected key issues about the authors who introduced this entity into psychiatric practice, but alsoĪbout its definition, risk factors, clinical manifestation, management aspects, as well as the similarities between Diogenes’ life and philosophy and clinical manifestation of DS. In this article we will focus on a much disputed eponym: “Diogenes syndrome” (DS). These results may help designing a future prospective study. In primary SD, without associated psychiatric pathology, an "exceptional" personality and, in 12% of cases, a traumatism during childhood were reported. We propose 14 different types according to the present symptoms, and eventual associated mental pathology. The variety of the clinical typology may explain the controversial data on the literature about the relevance of this syndrome. One forth of DS had no associated mental pathology, and could be primary, but a "queer" personality was reported in these cases and a traumatism during childhood in 12%. Half of the patients had a psychiatric disorder and 26% a dementia 7% were alcohol addicts. All socio professional categories were represented among the patients. Mean age of the subjects was 77.8 +/- 9.9 years (range 52 to 95) 71% were women. Difficulties in taking care of such subjects has conducted the socio-medical team to carry out a descriptive study to find out if these subjects had a pathological state or not.Ī retrospective observatory survey based on 600 questionnaires sent to medical and social workers to describe potential cases of DS.ġ36 questionnaires concerning 121 subjects have been completed by 53 professional workers, which represent 1.6 case for 10,000 individuals. It is a controversial syndrome with at least 4 almost permanent symptoms: no request from the subject although he possesses nothing unusual relationship with objects (hoarding of rubbish, or nothing in the house) unusual relationship with people (misanthropy) and extreme self-neglect. Diogenes syndrome, DS, is a behavioral disorder affecting more often older adults.
